Etsy Ads are worth it when your profit per sale leaves room for the ad cost, and when the listings you advertise already convert visitors into buyers. If either is missing, ads mostly buy clicks you can’t afford. This guide gives you a quick test to run before you spend, and a routine for managing ads once they’re on.
How Etsy Ads work
Etsy Ads place your listings higher in Etsy’s own search results and shopping pages. You set a daily budget, Etsy decides where your listings appear, and you pay when a shopper clicks.
Etsy Ads are different from Etsy’s off-site ads, where Etsy promotes your listings on other websites and charges a fee on resulting sales. Etsy runs those itself; the choices you control are your listings, your Etsy Ads and your shop.
Step 1: Work out your break-even point
Before switching ads on, calculate how much ad spend each sale can carry.
Profit margin = (price − product cost − Etsy fees − shipping you pay) ÷ price
Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ profit margin
Example: a $40 necklace leaves $14 after materials, fees and shipping. The margin is 35%. Break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.35 ≈ 2.9. That means every $1 of ads must bring in at least $2.90 in sales just to break even.
Etsy’s ad dashboard shows your ROAS. If it sits below your break-even number, the ads lose money on every sale they bring.
Step 2: Advertise the listings that already sell
Ads amplify what a listing already does. Before spending:
- Check conversion. Listings with views but no sales usually have a photo, price or description problem. Fix that first.
- Fix titles and tags. Etsy matches ads to searches using the same listing information as organic search, so weak titles and tags waste ad spend too.
- Start with your best sellers. They have the reviews and proven conversion that turn ad clicks into orders.
Step 3: Run a time-boxed test
- Pick 5 to 10 of your best-converting listings.
- Set a modest daily budget you’re comfortable losing for 30 days.
- After 30 days, compare each listing’s ROAS with your break-even ROAS.
- Keep the winners, switch off the listings that spend without selling, and move budget to what works.
Thirty days gives Etsy enough data to place your ads and gives you enough orders to judge.
When Etsy Ads are a good idea
- Your margin leaves room (break-even ROAS of roughly 3 or lower is a comfortable position).
- Your listings already convert organically.
- You have stock to fulfil extra orders, especially before busy seasons.
When to pause
- ROAS stays below break-even after a fair test.
- Listings get clicks but few sales, which points to a listing problem rather than an ad problem.
- You’re running low on stock or can’t ship faster.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I spend on Etsy Ads?
Start with a small daily budget on a few proven listings for 30 days, then scale only what beats your break-even ROAS.
Do Etsy Ads help organic ranking?
Ads bring extra sales, and sales history is one of the signals that can help listings do better over time. Treat that as a bonus, not the reason to run ads.
Can an agency manage my Etsy Ads?
Yes. We manage Etsy Ads and listing SEO through Etsy’s shop manager access, so you stay in control. Etsy marketing starts at $349 a month; ad spend is paid directly to Etsy.
