Most small businesses pay between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars a month for SEO. What decides the price is how many keywords you target, how much content gets written, and whether link building is included. At Webiclouds our monthly SEO plans start at $499 and go to $1,499, and we publish every price on our pricing page.
This guide explains what drives the cost, what you should get at each level, and how to tell whether the money is working.
What drives the cost of SEO
Four things set the price of a monthly SEO retainer:
- Number of target keywords. Ten local keywords is a different job from fifty national ones. Each keyword usually needs its own page, tuned content and tracking.
- Content volume. Writing two well-researched posts a month costs more than fixing titles and headings. Content is usually the largest line item.
- Link building. Earning links from real, relevant websites takes outreach time. Cheap link packages skip that work and buy links from networks Google ignores or penalises.
- Competition and market. Ranking a plumber in one town is cheaper than ranking an online store against national brands.
The platform matters less than people expect. WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace and WooCommerce can all rank well.
What each price level should include
| Plan | Monthly price | Best for | What’s included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local | $499 | Service businesses in one area | Up to 10 keywords, Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations and reviews strategy, technical and on-page fixes |
| Growth | $899 | Growing businesses and online stores | Up to 25 keywords, 2 SEO blog posts a month, link building and digital PR, monthly ranking and traffic report |
| Authority | $1,499 | National or international targets | 50+ keywords, 4 SEO blog posts a month, AI search visibility (ChatGPT, Google AI), monthly strategy call with a founder |
Whatever agency you choose, ask for the same breakdown: how many keywords, how many pieces of content, and how links are earned.
Red flags when buying SEO
- Guaranteed first-page rankings. Google controls the results. No honest agency can guarantee a position.
- Reports from the agency’s own tools only. Ask for reporting from your own Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4, which you own and can check.
- “Hundreds of backlinks” for a low fixed fee. Bulk links from unrelated or spammy sites can hurt your site.
- No written plan. You should know which keywords, which pages and which fixes come first, in what order.
- Locked accounts. Your website, Search Console and analytics should always stay in your name.
How long until SEO pays off
Technical fixes often show within weeks. Ranking gains for competitive terms usually take 3 to 6 months. That is why most SEO is sold monthly: the work compounds, and stopping early usually wastes what has been built.
A fair test is to look at the trend in Search Console after three months: are impressions and clicks for your target keywords rising, and are more of those visitors turning into enquiries or sales?
How to measure whether SEO is worth it
Track three numbers every month:
- Impressions and clicks for your target keywords in Google Search Console.
- Organic leads or sales in Google Analytics 4 (form submissions, calls, purchases).
- Cost per organic lead = monthly SEO fee divided by organic leads.
Compare the third number with what a lead costs you from ads. If organic leads become cheaper than paid ones over time, SEO is doing its job.
Frequently asked questions
Is cheap SEO worth it?
Usually not. Very low monthly prices rarely cover real content or link building, which are what move rankings.
Can I do SEO myself?
Yes, especially the technical and local basics. Many businesses start that way and hire help when they want to grow faster or target more competitive terms.
Do you guarantee first-page rankings?
No. We commit to the work, a clear plan and transparent monthly reporting from your own accounts.
Which plan should I start with?
If most of your customers are local, start with Local. If you sell online or across a country, start with Growth. Request a free audit and we’ll tell you which fits.
Want to know what SEO would cost for your site? Request a free website and SEO audit. A founder reviews your site and sends back a prioritised list of fixes.
